Benny's Moving & Storage
Shop Talk by Kitty Kaufman
On the stress-o-meter of life it's up there at number ten. Whether it's up or downtown or clear to the other side of the country, it's moving. And a bunch of stuff is about to come between you and the new place and it's every single thing you own.One of the perks of being a grownup is you no longer have to do it yourself. Professionals do it better and it's not only their big trucks with fancy lifts. They know how to carry an antique armoire down three flights and move a piano up and out. They'll pack all your stuff and place it in the right-size carton remembering to tape the bottom first. And they show up on time with strong men with good backs.
David Abotbool, president of Benny's Moving & Storage, does commercial and residential moves. Here are his recommendations. Start with a floor plan numbering the rooms and showing where furniture is to be placed. Next, check the company's record with the Better Business Bureau. Set the date well in advance and load up on new cartons and tape. As you pack, label each carton with the corresponding room number.
"Don't expect movers to disconnect or install appliances like stoves or refrigerators or computers," Abotbool says. "You need specialists for that along with the cable and other utilities." Some phone companies offer a great service for moving day; they'll keep your number live in both the old and new locations. He also recommends insurance that covers your goods beyond basic liability of 60 cents per pound.
For commercial and industrial clients, Benny's offers logistics through offices in Boston and Los Angeles including space planning, furniture systems, and library and records solutions. They provide packing (charged by the hour), packing materials, and phone quotes on smaller moves. Larger residential and commercial moves require an on-site visit.
